On June 22, Human Asia co-hosted the Conference on the Abolition of the Death Penalty in collaboration with the Delegation of the EU to the Republic of Korea, the Embassy of France, the UN Human Rights Office in Seoul, and the International Commission against the Death Penalty.
The conference brought together representatives from international organizations, diplomatic missions, academia, the legal profession, and civil society to discuss recent developments and challenges related to the abolition of the death penalty.
During the opening session, Prof. Changrok Soh (Human Asia President and Chair of the UN Human Rights Committee) emphasized the importance of continued international cooperation to advance the abolition of the death penalty and protect the right to life.
The first panel discussion examined the current status and trends of death penalty abolition in the region, highlighting recent developments, challenges, and efforts to promote abolition across different countries.
The second panel discussion focused on the situation of the death penalty in the Republic of Korea, exploring ongoing legal and policy discussions as well as steps being taken toward abolition.
