Half the Sky | | 2010/ Written by Nicolas D. Kristof and Sheyl WuDunn |  | Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, New York Times journalists back then, shared what they had witnessed around the world—how the violated women rights has been seriously damaged a country and the whole world.
The authors directly witnessed and met the girls trapped in brothels in India, enormous women facing unwanted early marriages and child birth in teen ages, and victims of honor killings and female genital mutilation in this 21th century. The girls and women’s stories encourage us to open our eyes from our ignorance and indifference on gender issue and urge us to take action. Also the authors not only tell us about the cruel reality of “gendercide”, but also introduce people and organizations who are taking action and working for the gender equality and empowerment. Moreover, they examine what causes failure or success in various efforts and programs for gender equality and women’s rights, so that we can be motivated to have a right direction on this issue. When we talk about human rights or development, they will likely be on economic development, poverty or AIDS/HIV. Of course, in the matter of human rights, every issue and aspect is important, but how do we think of half of the world population, women’s human rights?

Another Family | 2013 / Directed by Taeyoon Kim, Starring Chulmin Park, Yoosun Yoo, Kyuri Kim |  | The 3rd HAP(Human Asia Pioneers) started its first activity with watching a film, 'Another Family(Direct translation of Korean title: 'Another Promise'). This film was drawn attention since it was made entirely by crowd funding. The film making process took a long way from securing venues to raising funds. (As this movie has relations with big corporations, it was not easy to find investors and venues.)
According to the producer, the film budget was also earned by selling donated Kim-chi or bags and extras were volunteers as a part of their talent donation. Therefore 'Another Family' was made by the efforts of citizens and audiences.
The film is a family-based humanism movie about a father who tries to keep the promise with his daughter dying of a disease which she got while working at the big corporation. I wondered why the film title is 'another promise', not 'promise.' I thought this is because the promise is a promise with the daughter's co-workers, a promise with workers not to give up till the end and also a promise that the company must keep to its workers.
Another behind story for this title is, the original title was 'Dream Factory,' but there was already documentary film with the same title. So they changed it to 'Another Family,' which was also a famous slogan of some company. To avoid a controversy, they ended up with the tile 'Another Promise.' This is why the English title is 'Another Family' and there are a lot of scenes dealing with family...
